《野性的呼唤》的主人公是一条名叫巴克的狗。它原本毫无忧虑的生活在美国南方，却被家里的仆人偷偷卖到了阿拉斯加成为了一条雪橇犬，在目睹了一次惨象后，它开始遵循“大棒”和“利齿”的法则，并逐渐成为了一条优秀的雪橇犬。后来，它遇到了它真正喜欢的一个叫桑顿的人。他们去东部寻宝，桑顿却被印第安人杀死了。在为桑顿报了仇后，巴克回归了大自然。
